How to make the perfect ginger drink at home
Ginger drink is a warm, comforting, and incredibly healthy beverage, especially known for its soothing properties for digestion and its ability to fight inflammation. Making it at home is remarkably simple, requiring just a few basic ingredients.
What You'll Need (Ingredient)
Fresh Ginger : 1 to 2 inches
Water : 2 cups
Sweetener (optional) : 1 teaspoon
Lemon or lime : 1 slice or Wedge
Step 1: Prepare the Ginger
The first step is to get the ginger ready. You have two main options:
Peeling (Optional): Many people don't bother to peel the ginger, especially if it’s organic and thoroughly washed, as the skin contains nutrients. If you do choose to peel, use a small spoon to scrape the skin off easily.
Slicing or Grating:
For Stronger Tea: Grate the ginger. This releases the most surface area and gives a potent, spicy brew.
For Milder Tea: Simply thinly slice the ginger root.
Tip: A small piece of ginger (1 inch) is usually enough for a mild flavor, while a larger piece (2 inches or more) will be very spicy.
Step 2: Boil the Ginger
Pour the 2 cups of water into a small saucepan.
Add the prepared ginger (sliced or grated).
Bring the water to a boil over high heat.
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let it simmer for 10 to 20 minutes.
The longer you simmer, the stronger and more potent the tea will be. For maximum benefits and flavor, aim for at least 15 minutes.
Step 3: Strain and Serve
Remove the saucepan from the heat.
Carefully pour the liquid through a fine-mesh strainer directly into your mug(s) to remove the ginger pieces.
Discard the used ginger.
Step 4: Customize and Enjoy
This is where you can personalize your tea:
Sweetness: Stir in a teaspoon of honey (especially great if you have a sore throat) or your preferred sweetener.
Acidity: Squeeze a wedge of lemon or lime into the tea. This not only adds a refreshing zing but can also boost the vitamin C content.
Spice: For an extra layer of warmth, you can add a pinch of cinnamon stick or a dash of turmeric during the simmering stage.
Serve your homemade ginger tea immediately and enjoy the warming, comforting flavor!
